Our Mission

Our mission is to ride across Canada to raise both money and awareness for the national and provincial ALS Societies of Canada, and to provide hope and help to the people who are affected by and are living with this devastating disease. In May 2007, our 5-minute documentary, “Documenting Charity (and the Art of Street Shaving)”, won first prize in a contest at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. The film highlights how we raised $530.62 for the ALS Society of BC in one day by selling hugs on the street in Vancouver – since people with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, usually lose the use of their arms in the early stages of the disease, and therefore can’t hug for themselves! As a result of the overwhelming media coverage of our win, we raised an additional $7,000 from the public in the weeks that followed! Through this process, we have truly discovered what ordinary people can accomplish if they set their minds to it. We have been so inspired by what we were able to do in just one day that now we have committed to continuing our fundraising efforts for this disease by riding a Harley Davidson (with a sidecar!) across Canada.

What is ALS?

The disease we are supporting, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), is a rapidly progressive neuromuscular disease. It attacks the motor neurons that transmit electrical impulses from the brain to the voluntary muscles in the body. When these muscles fail to receive messages, they lose strength, atrophy, and die. ALS can strike anyone at any time, regardless of age, gender, or ethnic origin, and the average life expectancy after diagnosis is only 2 to 5 years.
